This Amazing Time Lapse Video Shows Sandy’s Assault On New York And The Moment The Lights Went Out

A camera on top of 2 Northside Piers shows New York before Sandy rolled in, its destructive approach, and the sudden loss of power as the storm surge flooded lower Manhattan.

This is the best angle and the longest exposure we’ve yet seen of Sandy’s full impact. The video was created by Silas Maniatis.

The cats brought home just under a quarter of what they killed, ate 30% and left 49% to rot where they died.
The carnage cuts across species. Lizards, snakes and frogs made up 41% of the animals killed, Loyd and fellow researcher Sonia Hernandez found. Mammals such as chipmunks and voles were 25%, insects and worms 20% and birds 12%. The researchers will present their findings this week at an Ecological Society of America conference in Portland, Ore.
Seeking a window into the hidden lives of cats, the researchers recruited 60 owners in the Athens, Ga., area. Each owner put a small video camera mounted on a break-away collar on the cat in the morning and let the cat out, then removed the camera and downloaded the footage each night. Each cat’s activities were recorded for seven to 10 days. The cats usually spent four to six hours outside every day.
The researchers worked with the National Geographic CritterCam team, which builds tiny mobile data gathering systems to study wild animal behavior. The cat cameras were the smallest they’ve made to date, National Geographic’s Greg Marshall says.”

- House cats kill more critters than thought – USATODAY.com

Zakir Hussain “The Speaking Hand” - part 1 (by...

Zakir Hussain “The Speaking Hand” - part 1 (by gadd50)

Yet the lambda viruses repeatedly acquired all four mutations in a matter of weeks. “There’s this thinking that it all has to come together at once,” Dr. Lenski said. “But that’s just not how evolution works.” Paul Turner, an evolutionary biologist at Yale University who was not involved in the research, said, “I really love this paper.” He said such experiments might allow scientists to forecast evolution in viruses and bacteria, potentially helping to prepare for new diseases. “It gives us hope of making evolution more predictive,” Dr. Turner said. This article has been revised to reflect the following correction: Correction: January 26, 2012 A previous version of this article misstated the probability that all four mutations for lambda viruses would arise at once.
“It’s Okay to be Neither,” By Melissa Bollow Tempel

Alie arrived at our 1st-grade classroom wearing a sweatshirt with a hood. I asked her to take off her hood, and she refused. I thought she was just being difficult and ignored it. After breakfast we got in line for art, and I noticed that she still had not removed her hood. When we arrived at the art room, I said: “Allie, I’m not playing. It’s time for art. The rule is no hoods or hats in school.”

She looked up with tears in her eyes and I realized there was something wrong. Her classmates went into the art room and we moved to the art storage area so her classmates wouldn’t hear our conversation. I softened my tone and asked her if she’d like to tell me what was wrong.

“My ponytail,” she cried.

“Can I see?” I asked.

She nodded and pulled down her hood. Allie’s braids had come undone overnight and there hadn’t been time to redo them in the morning, so they had to be put back in a ponytail. It was high up on the back of her head like those of many girls in our class, but I could see that to Allie it just felt wrong. With Allie’s permission, I took the elastic out and re-braided her hair so it could hang down.

“How’s that?” I asked.

She smiled. “Good,” she said and skipped off to join her friends in art.
